Getting to the Valley

There are three airports that serve the Rio Grande Valley, located in the cities of Brownsville (BRO), Harlingen (HRL), and McAllen (MFE). Please be advised; McAllen International Airport (MFE) is approximately an 1hr. and 29min. drive to the conference location. For convenience purposes, we recommend you fly into either BRO or HRL.

Most likely, you’ll need to fly through at least one of the following major cities on your way here: Austin, Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio.

If you’ve ever lived in Texas (or some other big sky state), you probably aren’t intimidated by a long road trip. It will take you about four and a half hours from San Antonio (I-69C & I-2 E) to the Island, or six hours from Houston (I-69 East).

Getting to and around the Island

Depending upon how you  get to the Valley, you’ll face different options for getting to the Island. The Valley does provide Lyft services.

The Brownsville / South Padre Island Airport (BRO) offers a regular shuttle to and from the airport, and the service is free. See the Schedule. It is about an hour trip using the free shuttle from the Brownsville airport to South Padre Island.

Staying on South Padre Island

We’ve reserved a block of rooms at the La Quinta Inn & Suites South Padre Island, located across the street from the South Padre Island Convention Centre, at a reduced conference rate. Call 956-772-7000. Ext.2, and use the conference code: “National Conference on Peer.” Before you call, check the hotel website. Since the conference will take place during the off season, you may be able to get a lower rate, depending upon when and for how long you book your room.

There are many other places to stay on South Padre Island and in nearby Port Isabel, so we recommend that you look around. The Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island and the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites – South Padre Island are both a short walk from the Convention Centre. There’s also the KOA cabins and camp-grounds on the south end of the island. Cabins can accommodate up to 8 people and are a short 10 minute walk to the jetties/beach located inside Isla Blanca Park.Screen Shot 2018-04-19 at 10.04.52 AM
